William Hill Estate Winery

Extraordinary Vision, Unparalleled Location

In a region known for its incredible wines and extraordinary tasting rooms, William Hill Estate Winery stands out with their highly acclaimed wines and stunning vistas. Perched high upon the quiet, rolling foothills of the Vaca Mountains just off the bustling Silverado Trail, the 200-acre William Hill Estate’s unparalleled panoramic views of our estate vineyard and the Napa Valley is matched only by our rich, fruit-forward wines and world-class hospitality.

Founded nearly 40 years ago, William Hill Estate Winery has three distinct collections, offering ideal wines for a variety of occasions. Though the winery found acclaim from their first releases, the team at William Hill Estate is driven to keep moving forward and evolving with each new vintage.

“We have an incredible history, but what really motivates us is that we set the highest standards for ourselves, from careful vineyard site selection and planning to meticulous attention in the cellar,” said Winemaker Mark Williams. “It’s one of the first things I think people should know about our Napa Valley wines: we have incredible fruit to work with every year. When I share one of our wines or have people come out to the winery, I know that we’ve done everything we can to make that wine or experience the best it can possibly be.”

Our most exclusive collection, Benchland Series, features highly expressive, smaller-lot wines from our estate vineyards and other top Napa Valley sites. Primarily exclusive to our direct-to-consumer channel, the Benchland Series encompasses the pinnacle of our portfolio, Benchmark, as well as our Winemaker’s Series, which includes Chardonnay, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Our Benchland Series Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are made with select lots from our estate vineyards as well as premier vineyards in the Napa Valley.

Our Napa Valley Collection, featuring Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and our Bench Blend Red Blend, celebrates our home in the Napa Valley with complex, full-bodied flavors and rich structure. Finally, the approachable Coastal Collection wines, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir, offer classic William Hill Estate style at an accessible price.

CELEBRATING NAPA VALLEY

William Hill Estate founder, Bill Hill, was a renowned vineyard developer who hand-picked our Napa Valley location for its incredibly unique combination of soils, aspect and elevation. Located just off the Silverado Trail on what’s known as the Silverado Bench, we have an unusual level of diversity in fruit flavor and structure within our 140 acres planted to vine.

William Hill Estate sits at the center of four different nested AVAs in Napa Valley: Atlas Peak to the northeast, Coombsville to the south, Oak Knoll to the west, and the Stags Leap District to the northwest. While close to the San Pablo Bay and receiving some of its cooling influences,

William Hill Estate’s location also offers a diverse soil profile, from weathered volcanic soils off the Vaca Mountain range to rich alluvial washes.

In total, there are approximately five different soil series on the William Hill Estate vineyard, with aspect and elevation a significant factor in the soil profile. Fruit grown in lower areas of the estate are on fertile loamy, alluvial soils, like the Cabernet Sauvignon blocks on the western side of the estate. These blocks give us clusters with bigger berries, complex fruit expression and a rounded, plush mouthfeel with notes of black cherry and cassis.

The decomposed volcanic rock on our hillside blocks are less fertile, but give us fruit with more structure and intensity. For example, at the center of the estate and a few of the blocks on the rolling hills adjacent to the winery, there are significant gravel streaks within alluvial wash. These rocky-soiled blocks are well-draining, stressing the vine and producing very small berries and increased skin-to-juice ratio. Fruit from these blocks have more concentration, color extraction and focused flavors in the fruit and, thus, create more structured, layered and intense wines.

William Hill Estate’s incredible location is just part of what inspires Mark in crafting the winery’s award-winning collection of wines. “Having this amazing site, these 140 acres of prime vineyard in the Napa Valley, is a winemaker’s dream,” he continued. “One of the advantages of having estate vineyards is having utmost control of all the different factors that influence the vintage. I can walk out of my office into a block, taste the grapes for optimal ripeness and have it picked and delivered the same day. Each block has its own dedicated space in the cellar, so we can keep all these lots separate and bring out their best expression of the land. I farm these vineyards according to what I envision the wine to be and once it’s in the cellar, I choose the best techniques to fulfill that vision.”
